Moorlands Mail. Yorkshire Post exclusive

Popular newspaper the Yorkshire Post welcomed two budding journalists from the Moorlands Mail to take a peek behind the scenes.

On May 27, Gregory Bertrand and Dom Bailey interviewed Peter Charlton, editor of the York-shire Post, and then were shown around the newsroom by the man himself. And the following day, new Prime Minister David Cameron had the same tour!

In comparison to the small IT Room, where the magic of the Moorlands Mail is created, the newsroom of the Yorkshire Post is massive; there are at least one hundred computers com-pared to the sixteen PCs of Moorlands.

During the tour we met the picture editor, who showed us the thousands of pictures received every minute from around the world.  “There are around 80 journalists working for me in this building,” Mr Charlton told us.

“I left at school at 16 after my GCSEs to join as a journalist. I became an editor after being a re-porter with the Yorkshire Post for many years. I then transferred to editorial production. These are the people who edit the story, double check every line, and also make every story fit on the page.”  He added: “The best part of my job is the people. That’s both the men and the women who are in the editorial department. Also the people I meet in the course of the job. One minute I could be in a football match visiting as a guest, and the other minute I could be at a drinks reception at 10 Downing Street.

Mr Charlton said that the newspaper runs so smoothly because of the way that everyone works as a team. “There is no such thing as a typical day in the news room,” he said. “However, most days are busy and there is a creative environment in which to work but there are lots of deadlines so people are fixed on their computer.”

Despite the obvious differences, such as workers and funding, the big difference between our small tabloid and their large broadsheet is the effort that is pumped into the stories. Over five weeks, one issue of Moorlands Mail is produced whereas a Yorkshire Post is a daily occurrence.

We felt very lucky to have such a great insight into the working of a real newspaper and hope-fully picked up some tips for the Moorlands Mail!

By Dominic Bailey and Gregory Bertrand
