Year 7 and 8
At Moorlands, Year 7 and Year 8 boys and girls are given numerous opportunities, and are expected to take on responsibilities as the most senior members of the pupil body.
Curriculum
While still preparing pupils for the Common Entrance exams where required, Moorlands has developed a two year diploma course. All areas of the curriculum are broken into modules and assessed regularly, allowing for individuals to achieve in and beyond the classroom. While still retaining the highest of standards in traditional academic subjects, Year 7 and Year 8 pupils are given the opportunity to develop their skills in Sport, Music, Art, Design & Technology – and their progress is assessed in these areas. Pupils still sit formal exams in January and June in Year 7 and 8.Important elements of the Moorlands Diploma are teamwork, leadership and critical thinking. With input from outside experts, pupils are guided in developing their skills in these areas, and, by the time they are in Year 8, the results of the emphasis on taking responsibility, team leadership and working together can be seen in the pupil’s approach to all aspects of school life.
Sport
Pupils play sport at Under 13 level in Year 7 and Year 8. All are encouraged to participate in the variety of sporting clubs on offer, and most pupils represent the school in fixtures. Pupils who excel in sports may be awarded their Senior Colours or Senior Half Colours if they meet the set criteria. As they progress through the two senior years at Moorlands, pupils are, with careful guidance, given opportunities to take increasing responsibility for their own training and team management.
Leadership & Responsibilities
Year 7 and Year 8 pupils are expected to take the lead at school. In addition to formal responsibilities, senior pupils take the initiative in helping younger pupils, and learn, both formally and informally about leadership styles and techniques in different situations. Those pupils ho show exceptional leadership qualities, and set a good example to others are selected as School Prefects in Year 8.
Being a pupil at Moorlands in Year 7 and Year 8 takes pupils well beyond the normal educational experiences experienced by children their age. We take great pride in watching our Moorlanders move onto the next phase of their education – confident, accomplished and with a mature, sensible approach to the world around them.
